History of Kumbh :
The Kumbh Mela’s history dates back to the ancient Hindu texts and myths. In mythology, the event has its origins in the story of Samudra Manthan, in which gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) churn the ocean in search of Amrit, the nectar of immortality. There was a tremendous battle when the nectar emerged, and drips of it landed on Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The Kumbh Mela tradition, which represents the never-ending conflict between good and evil and the quest for heavenly knowledge, started when these locations were consecrated.
Historical documents of historical explorers such as Hiuen Tsang, who traveled to India during the 7th-century reign of King Harsha, indicate that the Kumbh Mela has been celebrated for thousands of years. The occasion has changed with time and is now a fundamental part of Hindu philosophy and history.
The Mahakumbh Mela occurs every 12 years and rotates among four sacred locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. In 2025, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj will host this awe-inspiring event. According to Hindu mythology, a few drops of the nectar of immortality (Amrit) fell at these locations during a celestial battle, sanctifying them forever. Bathing in these waters during the Mahakumbh is believed to cleanse the soul and liberate one from the cycle of birth and rebirth.
Types Of Kumbh
The Maha Kumbh mela is a once-in-a-lifetime event that will be witnessed by the world in 2025. According to numerous estimates, organizers anticipate that over 40 crore people would attend the Mahakumbh in 2025.
However, in addition to the Mahakumbh, there are three more kinds of Kumbh, each occurring at certain times, places, and with distinct astrological alignments.
The Magh Mela
Every year, during the month of Magh, which is January through February in the Gregorian calendar, Prayagraj hosts the Magh Mela. Despite not being formally referred to as a Kumbh Mela, the Magh Mela does serve as a forerunner to the bigger events. At the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers converge, devotees congregate, bathe ceremoniously in the waters, and worship to the gods and goddesses.

Ardh Kumbh
Every six years, Ha and Prayagraj host the Ardh Kumbh Mela, which is celebrated and observed there. Since “Ardh” signifies “half,” it is placed between two “Purna Kumbhs.” The last Ardh Kumbh was celebrated in Prayagraj in 2019 and is a grand event that gets believers ready for the Purna Kumbh.

Purna Kumbh
Every twelve years, the Purna Kumbh Mela takes place in one of the four holy places: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik, or Ujjain. Jupiter’s position in reference to the Sun and Moon determines the Purna Kumbh’s date and timing. The Purna Kumbh commemorates Jupiter’s full orbit around the sun.

Maha Kumbh 2025
The Maha Kumbh Mela is the most powerful and rarest of all Kumbh gatherings. It is said that planetary alignments of the Mahakumbh come only once every 144 years, and only after 12 Purna Kumbh is one Mahakumbh celebrated. The sheer years and wait that devotees have to do to celebrate the Mahakumbh makes it an extraordinary event filled with devotional energies.
